The world of vintage cars - museums

August Horch Museum, Zwickau

In September 2004 the August-Horch Museum was founded in Zwickau, the home of the Saxon car tradition. The museum is situated in what used to be the Audi factory and its 3,000 square metres also cover what used to be the office building and the Horch villa.

The museum promises "milestones and brand history" to the car enthusiasts who visit.

The legendary Horch phaeton from 1911 can been seen along with the DKW F1- very innovative for its time, this was the first widely produced small car to have front wheel drive. Various models from Horch, Audi and Wanderer can also be seen.

However, Zickau is not only a car manufacturing city. Besides the August-Horch museum a visit to the historical old town where you can see the detailed restauration of the art nouveau - and Wilhelminian style - is also worth while. Zwickau is also the birthplace of Robert Schumann.

The Car and Technology Museum, Sinsheim

If you take the motorway A6 from Heilbronn to Mannheim you see the Car and Technology Museum Sinsheim on the right hand side. Here you find the biggest collection of Mercedes-Maybach cars in the world, one of which is the oldest roadworthy model, a "W5SG" from 1928.

Together with clubs and societies from the vintage car scene, the museum organises drives, members meetings, prize givings and parts fairs. The second historic  omnibus European meeting will take place from the 26th to the 28th of April.

Mercedes-Benz Museum, Stuttgart

Daimler-Chrysler promises the visitors to the new Mercedes-Benz Museum "a journey through the evolution of the car. This museum is situated on the motorway in Stuttgart and looks like an element from the future. On the one hand the exhibition answers the question: "Who invented the car?" (Carl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler) and on the other hand it presents a huge collection of the first Wilhelminian style cars from the end of the 19th century.

The visitor receives a detailed account of the first promotion tour in a motor vehicle: Bertha Benz, wife of the inventor, proved that the vehicle was suited to every day use by way of her so called "long distance trip". The publicity that the invention gained through this trip made a financial breakthrough possible at last.
